Vince

After Vince ended his call with Maggie, he felt more anxious than before. Yesterday, things had gotten tense between him and Cindy. As soon as they’d returned to their room, Cindy accused him of still being in love with Maggie.

“I’m going to always love her,” he said.

Cindy snatched her suitcase out of the closet. “That’s a fucking cop-out, Vince.”

Vince sat on the edge of the bed, tying his sneakers. “It’s not a cop-out. Maggie and I were together for two years.”

Cindy slammed the suitcase on the bed. Vince felt the vibration on his back. “Why didn’t you tell me that she was your ex-girlfriend?”

“Because it wasn’t a big deal.”

Cindy snorted bitterly. “You’re an asshole, Vince. Do you know who I thought your ex was? Angelina.”

“Angelina?” He considered that for a moment. He definitely wouldn’t have kicked Angelina out of his bed if he had met her before everyone they had in common came into their lives. “Why would you assume that?”

“Because she’s always touching you.”

“Angelina touches everybody. That’s the way she is.”

Cindy rolled her eyes and stopped putting her folded clothes into the suitcase. “So what happened?”

“Nothing’s ever happened between Angelina and me.”

“I mean between Maggie and you?”

Vince dropped his foot off of his knee. He let it slam hard against the floor as a memory invaded his thoughts. “She fucked Robert.”

Cindy gasped, shocked. “Robert Tango?”

“Yeah.”

“But he’s your best friend.”

Vince shrugged. The jury was still out on Robert being his best friend. Things hadn’t been the same between them since he’d caught him munching on Maggie’s pussy. There comes a time when a man has to wake up and sniff the smelling salts. Robert had never been as good a friend to him as he had been to Robert. Five months ago, Robert had left A&Rt to pursue his own interests, and they hadn’t spoken since their last handshake and good-bye. Vince hadn’t missed him.

Cindy whipped over to the closet to collect the clothes she’d put on hangers. “Well, Maggie seems to be over you.”

Vince felt the impact of her words. As far as he was concerned, Cindy couldn’t know that She didn’t see the way Maggie responded to him when they were alone, nor did she catch the instances where their eyes met and Maggie looked away in panic.

Vince’s cell phone rang, and he saw that the call was from Pamela Dingy, their in-house PR person. He excused himself to take the call outside. Pamela had just gotten word that the article on Kelly Simon had been halted for forty-eight hours. She asked if he’d had anything to do with it, and Vince said no. He didn’t want anyone to know Maggie and Monroe were on the case, so he left it at that. After the phone call ended, he stood on the porch and looked out over the grass. How many times had he studied those trees? For the first time in six months, he felt as if he was missing a very important part of himself.
